Drinking Water for Energy and Health
Water is essential to life. Our bodies are made up of about two-thirds water. All our organs, cells, and bodily chemical reactions require this liquid solvent. And you’re always losing water, through breathing, sweating, and going to the bathroom. These lost fluids have to constantly be replenished.
When you become dehydrated, your basic biological functions suffer and your body slows to conserve fluids and energy. You feel increasingly sluggish, you might get a headache, and you start losing focus. Also, being frequently dehydrated leaves you more vulnerable to a variety of illnesses. In Chris Johnson’s book Meal Patterning, he says about 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated, contributing to renal disease, bronchitis, asthma, skin problems, headaches, and other maladies.
Drinks that Promote Dehydration and Low Energy
It’s not just because we drink too little water that we become dehydrated. Often, the conventional diet is full of energy drinks, coffee, soda, other caffeinated products, and alcoholic beverages. These act as diuretics, dehydrating us and draining us of energy. Plus, high-sugar and high-caffeine items like energy drinks and sodas cause short energy spikes and dramatic, longer-lasting crashes.
Some Reasons You Need Water
You should aim for 8 servings of liquid every day, more than half of which should be water. If you’re highly active and during particularly hot weather, drink more. Organic fruit and/or vegetable juices are the best choice for supplementing water.
Here are just some of the functions of water. It:
- Replaces fluids lost over the course of the day to prevent dehydration (and dehydration’s many negative effects, like headaches, lethargy, difficulty concentrating, digestive discomfort, etc.)
- Keeps your belly fuller to prevent overeating
- Promotes digestive health and efficient conversion of food into energy
- Replenishes your tissues
- Maintain fluid volume in your blood vessels
- Is essential for cell and oxygen transport
- Supports healthy kidney function, particularly elimination of waste
- Dilutes toxins and assists with flushing them from your body
- Supports all other organ function
- Is important to the transport and use of nutrients
- Helps regulate your body temperature
- Is necessary for immune system function
- Promotes skin and hair health
